OCD Blog, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Blog
  1. Feeling stressed out!!!  I venture to say most people feel stress daily.  We live such a crazy lifestyle.  I know personally it was hard for me to sit and watch a movie because I am use to multi taking and I was losing the ability to put my mind on only one track.

I have no major stressors, but constant everyday stress, left to build up can still put a burden on the body.  So I have changed things a tad.  I thought I would share them with you.

Daily exercise, I don’t profess to do this enough, but I do know it can make a major impact on the body for the good..  When I do exercised daily, it really helped with lowering my tension level.

Plan and work ahead, I listened to a CD (in the car I even multitask) about managing your life, to live it more wisely.  It mentioned looking ahead, working ahead.  I try to get most projects done now at least 1 month ahead of time… wow, major improvement.  Much of my stress had been self induced because I put things off until I had pressure to get them done.  And now when something unexpected comes up, I am not such a crazy woman.

Practice deep breathing exercises. Most of us under stress no long breath as deeply.  Not only does deep breathing relax you it helps clear the mind and emotions.

    1. Sit upright and using your abdominal area, deep through your nose to the count of 8
    2. Hold your breath to the count of 8 (each count being about a second)
    3. Purse your lips and exhale forcefully for the count of 10
    4. Repeat at least 15 times

The first few times I suggest doing this where you don’t have to worry if you get dizzy

Learn the magic word…. NO  If doing the task will overwhelm you, you have the right to gently say no.  Also learn that you don’t have to give an excuse.  Just say I am so sorry but I can’t.  Or I wish I could but I can’t.

Laughter is the best medicine. Laughter releases endorphins and other chemicals which make you feel better equipped to handle stress when it happens.

Eat and Supplement well.   Process foods are void of nutrients and tax the body’s energy.  Since stress washes out specific nutrients. Omega oils and B complex are helpful for those with no more than every day stress. (B complex caution for those with anxiety and OCD).

Adequate rest is essential, so the body can use the nutrients to replenish and repair the nervous system.

And whenever possible… avoid stress.  But the above tips will help you better handle stress so it doesn’t ravage your health.

  2. When you go to the doctor or even to an herbalist, make sure you take along your common sense.  Here is an example of why this is important.

Usually the cause of pain in the tailbone is a fall or a delivery a large baby.  But a few years back, a guy in his late 50’s came to me complaining of a pain while he was sitting and intensifying immediately upon rising, but if he walked around for a while the pain seemed to lessen. He said it felt like the tailbone was bruised.

Knowing a deficiency in trace minerals can cause such pain,  I suggested he might be lacking trace minerals. “NO.. my doctor says it is caused by an extra bone that I was born with in my tailbone” he practically shouted.

When asked, how long her suffered, he revealed that it hadn’t hurt him before that time. Sarcastically I said, if the pain is caused by something you were born with, why didn’t it hurt for the whole 59 years?

He had no argument for that logic so he agreed to take 1 oz in the AM and 1 oz in the PM for 2 months colloidal mineral but it was to PROVE I was wrong.

For a full year, I didn’t know how the minerals worked until he called up to make an appointment to help his mother’s osteoporosis. He said the minerals alleviated ALL of his tailbone pain and he avoided the operation on his spine which the doctors said was necessary to get him pain free.

To think the doctor’s suggest was an operation. If you have similar symptoms, I sure hope you at least try the Ionic minerals BEFORE you let a doctor hack into you, if you have tail bone pain.

So please analyze what a doctor or an herbalist tells you before you do what they say.

  3. If one of your new years resolutions is to have a healthier 2012 and if you can afford it and you have no major health concern, a gentle detox is a good start for beginning any health improvement protocol.

But doing it right is so important.  You want the body to be able to evacuate the toxins, so certain steps are essential.

First, I would make sure my bowels were moving at least once a day, preferably three times a day.

Secondly I would take 2 Chinese Liver Balance Concentrate and 2 packs of Tiao He Cleanse a day for 30 days.    This helps the bile start to flow and starts a siphoning out of toxins from the body.

I also suggest Everybody’s fiber because it is important at this time to intake a significant amount of fiber to help hold onto the toxins until they evacuate from the bowel, hence preventing the body from reabsorbing them.

Thirdly I would do a parasite cleanse alternated with a parasite cleanse… I recommend….. Para-cleanse, then a Tiao He cleanse then another Para-cleanse, Tiao He cleanse and the final Para-cleanse ending with a Tiao He.

I would then suggest taking probiotic eleven (8 a day).

Lastly, I would follow a good diet rich in raw vegetables, fresh fruits, proteins and whole grains.

It is infinitely easier to retain good health than to regain it after it is lost.   A yearly or Biyearly cleanse can help retain good health.

  4. What cervical cancer caused by a virus?   There are a lot of different cancers that are known to cause cancer and they have known it for years.

    It has been known since

    • 1908 -  Avian leukosis virus causes leukemia in chickens… Oluf Bang and Vilhelm Ellerman, University of Copenhagen
    • 1910 -  Genome Endogenous Retrovirus produced solid tumor sacroma in chickens … Peyton Rous,at Rockefeller extended Bang and Ellerman's experiments
    • 1933 - Papilloma virus causes mammalian tumor in rabbits … Richard Edwin Shope
    • 1936: Mouse mammary tumor virus transmitted cancer by breast feeding …   John J. Bittner building on studies showing the save in 1915, by A.F. Lathrop and L. Loeb.
    • 1954 -  Polyoma virus causes salivary and other tumor in mice … Ludwik Gross, Bronx VA medical.  Not readily accepted until the results were confirmed by scientists at NIH reproducing the experiments under the same conditions.
    • 1961 - Simian Vacuolating virus 40   used to make of Salk and Sabin polio vaccines causes cancer in Syrian hamsters … Eddy at NIH, and Hillman & Sweet at Merck laboratory.

    And in HUMANS?

    • 1964 - Herpesvirus 4 aka Epstein Barr Virus causes Burkitt lymphoma cancer in humans… Anthony Epstein, Bert Achong and Yvonne Barr.
    • mid-1960s -  Hepatitis B causes the Hepatocellular carcinoma…. Baruch Blumberg, NIH and Fox Chase Laboratory later confirmed by R. Palmer Beasley and others.
    • 1980 – Human T-Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV I) …. Bernard Poiesz & Robert Gallo at NIH with Mistuaki Yoshida and coworkers in Japan.
    • 1984–86 –Human PapillomaViruses HPV16 and HPV18 causes 70% all cervical cancers… Harald zur Hausen and Lutz  (THE PUBLIC didn’t hear of this UNTIL there was an vaccine developed…HMmm)
    • 1987 – Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) causes Hepatocellular carcinoma... Michael Houghton at Chiron and D.W. Bradley   Later Chiron was awarded the patent for Hepatitis C Virus and has sued and states they will sue anyone who tries to study the virus in search of a cure.
    • 1994 – Herpesvirus (KSHV aka HHV8)Kaposi Sarcoma … Patrick S. Moore, Yuan Change, Frank Lee and Ethel Cesarman, Columbia
    • 2008 – Merkel Cell Polyomavirus causes 70 to 80% of all Merkel Cell Carcinoma Chang and Moore,  University of Pittsburgh Cancer

Worldwide, the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer estimated that in 2002 17.8% of human cancers were caused by infection, with 11.9% being caused by one of seven different viruses.  Parkin, Donald Maxwell (2006). "The global health burden of infection-associated cancers in the year 2002". International Journal of Cancer 118 (12): 3030. doi:10.1002/ijc.21731. PMID 16404738.

As a side note, GMO foods puts the DNA of virus into the DNA of our foods.

  5. Symptoms

    OVER-methylation

    High anxiety

    Low libido

    Obsessions but not compulsions

    Paranoia

    Auditory hallucinations

    Underachievement

    Heavy body hair

    Nervous legs

    Grandiosity (exaggerating)

    Upper body pain

    Dry eyes

    Depression

    Chemical sensitivities

    Food allergies

Adverse reactions to SSRI’s and St John’s wort

    Blood test indicators

Elevated levels of dopamineNorepinephrine - serotonin, and low absolute basophils (a type of white blood cell involved in immune response) and whole blood histamines (what causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction such as swelling)..

    UNDER- Methylation

    Seasonal allergies

    OCD

    Perfectionism

    High libido

    Sparse body hair

    Blood test indicators

High Histamine Levels (blood test would indicate levels – healthy level 40-70 mcg/dL) and absolute basophils (a type of white blood cell involved in immune response)

Low levels of serotonin, dopamine, Norepinephrine  (Neurotransmitters)

  6. Lessen your chance of stroke or heart attack by improving the quality and consistency of your blood.

Sticky, thick blood can clot… If the clot goes to the brain, it can cause a stroke, to the heart… a heart attack.

High Triglycerides causes the blood to get sticky and thicker.   This can be very dangerous.

Triglycerides are a byproduct caused by poor digestion of carbohydrates and fats.   Limiting the carbohydrates to a prudent amount is helpful… Eating only good fats is also helpful.

It is the liver’s job to digest those foods.  So in addition, I would nutritionally support the liver… My favorite is liver cleanse formula.

Until the liver starts functioning at peak performance, Vitamin E with selenium (taken with a protein) helps the blood become more slippery.

Super Omega 3 oil and pau de arco are gentle natural blood thinners.  CAUTION:  Do not take with blood thinners like Coumadin.

Drinking 4 oz of room temperature distilled water every hour for 3 days reportedly pulls triglycerides out of the blood.

Dehydration can also cause the blood to get thick… I strongly suggest drinking ½ of the body weight in ounces of water.

  7. Heidi has offered the following idea:

I would like to share an easy idea for a more alkaline diet. I was having trouble getting fresh organic produce, but was able to find all kinds of frozen organic vegetables.

I came up with this solution:

I let the frozen vegetables thaw and blend them with a large amount of parsley, raw onions and peppers. This results in a beautiful green puree which I then freeze in ice cube trays.

I add them to soups, salad dressings, scrambled eggs etc. Or just heat it gently for a tasty vegetable soup to which you can add potatoes, carrots, squash or eat just by itself.

Of course you can do this with fresh uncooked vegetables as well.

    Thank you Heidi  :o)

  8. In October NSP is coming out with a small line of flower essence combinations which are made of the American equivalent of Bach Flower Remedies.

Everyone knows a good bowel or liver detox is helpful to the over all health of a person, well emotional toxins being purge is equally beneficial. .

Here is a little synopsis of what they are and the symptoms they address.

    • Distress Remedy…….. Same as old works… Just a little different
    • Keep cool ….. Anger, irritability, feeling cranky, losing one’s temper.
    • Finding Strength….. For those who are afraid to express anger or suppresses anger, someone who is a doormat

My ex husband had issues with abandonment.  He took a flower essence called Purple Monkey Flower and it worked wonderfully.

They will be in 2 ounce bottles which cost $19.96 …. Wholesale

  9.  “I am going to wash that gray right out of my hair?  Isn’t that how the jingle goes?  So why is this posted on an OCD website?

It takes a minute so please bare with me.

Although there is a theory that wear and tear of the follicles of the hair produces peroxide which when it accumulates inhibits the synthesis of the hairs pigmentation called melanin which gives your hair color.  There is another which believes a lack of natural copper (not the metal but the mineral)

The liver stores copper, so the lack of this copper or greying can indicate a weakened liver.

The liver function DEFINITELY effects OCD and GAD.  Ironically the liver needs copper to be healthy.. as well as iron.

Foods high in these minerals are: Prunes, oranges, beets, almonds, eggs, whole grains, dried beans and green leafy vegetables.

There are herbs which has the reputation of prolonging younger hair color.

    • Sage, which can be added to food.
    • Fo Ti or more commonly known as Ho Sho Wu, which translates loosely as Look at Mr. Wu’s black hair. Based on the legend that a gentleman named Mr. Wu took the herb and didn’t get gray hair until he was far into his 90’s.

So I wonder if those herbs are also helpful for the liver.

Personally I don’t mind my gray hair.  Part of being a grandma includes being gray :o) But I do want to be healthy, so instead of ignoring my gray hair, I think I will nourish my liver.

  10. SAD

Seasonal Affective Disorder aka The Winter Blues

Most living things are dependant and effected by the sun.

I dare say the average person feels more energy and joy on a beautiful, clear, sunny day, but there are many whose experience a marked lack of energy, lack of enthusiasm and depression when deprived from those essential rays.

Some so severely (about 1 in 10 to 20, dependent on how close you are to the north or south pole) that they revert to taking medication to survive it.

SO how do you know if you truly have SAD?

     IF:

#1 Symptoms happen at the same time of the year

#2 Symptoms are alleviated unassisted during sunny seasons

#3 Symptom cycles happen at least 2 years

#4 Same symptoms are not experienced off season times

I would suspect you have this condition.

The pineal gland is paramount in how someone handles the winter lighting.  Things that nourish the pineal, so it is able to retain the sun’s benefit, are:  Thai-go, Blueberries, Blackberries, Prunes… any berry which is dark blue or purple.

Getting an adequate amount of Ultra Violet light, i e, sunlight during the sunny days.  Avoid sunglasses when possible so the retna receives the indirect sun rays which stimulates and strengthens the pineal gland.

If that isn’t adequate, I suggest full spectrum lighting in the home and office.  Now, you buy light bulbs that fit into existing light fixtures.   I personally would try these measures before medications.

  11. I have had OCD.  I know you can just “get over it”  This Blog is no way trying to say that.  However, I think it is important to let people know that the mind is a powerful thing.

Double blind studies are set up with a placebo because they have found that a person who perceives something will work has a strong influence on the treatment.  A person’s thoughts and believe can either enhance or impair a nutritional protocol.

But we have to keep in mind that our brains and emotions are amazing.  So monitoring our thoughts and feelings can be a profound influence on our health.

Recently I have taken a webinar and was reminded on how thoughts effect our brains and chemicals which are released.  The lecturer Sylvia Rogers wrote a book called “CONTROL YOUR THOUGHTS”

Here are some facts which I personally didn’t realize

    • Negative thinking causes inflammation in the inner limbic system
    • It lowers serotonin levels
    • It causes acid and causes physical changes within the brain

Lies also effect your brain… when you speak words which conflict with what is in your heart, neurochemicals slow or stop and stress is realized and your thought life diminishes.

The lecturer suggest that we think before you react, try to dwell on uplifting thought and reject negative, pessimistic thoughts.

There are clear improvements in the activity of our immune system hormonal system, nervous system, brain and heart when we give and receive love.

Or as my mother use to say, the best way to  get over feeling sad or to forget your own problems is to help someone else through theirs.

  12. David, a wonderful friend of mine sent me a link to an article on “Ultra-Shape”

Since it was in a health news type bulletin, I thought it was going to talk about the cure for cancer or hemorrhoids or something that will ease suffering.  But it wasn’t… the article started out by saying… COMING TO AMERICA SOON!!!.. it was talking about new product called ultrashape which they are trying to get FDA approved to use in the United States.

Ultrashape machine is using ultrasound to destroy fat cells so the body can rid itself of unwanted fat and cellulite.  Sounds interesting?  It sure did to me, I was thinking of buying a home version and keep it on all night long. :o)  But then I thought what would it do to the myelin sheathing (protective fatty coating around the nerve.

Doesn’t it make you wonder… If ultrasound can break up fat in the tissue of your thighs, what is ultrasound that is pointed towards an infant’s brain is made of fatty acids and cholesterol.

If an opera singer hitting a high note can shatter glass, and that doctors use ultrasound to break up gall and kidney stones, even tough to break calcium stones, then the potential of damage is there.

Most doctors probably don’t know when their fetal stethoscope is stored.  Almost ALL doctors use a Doppler to listen to a baby’s heartbeat.  An article I read said that the Doppler does more damage to the nervous system as an ultrasound.

  13. I am sooooooo excited about a small line of flower essences which will be available in October.

They are combinations made of the American equivalent of Bach Flower Remedies.

Although soothing the adrenal, strengthening the function of the liver and nourishing the myelin is still supremely important.  I think these remedies will be very beneficial.

Here they are with a little synopsis of what they are helpful for.

    • Distress Remedy…….. Same as old works… Just a little different
    • Keep cool ….. Anger, irritability, feeling cranky, losing one’s temper.
    • Finding Strength….. For those who are afraid to express anger or suppresses anger, someone who is a doormat
    • Release It….. For those who are experiencing griefs, sadness, pity party, whining, to be able move on and let go of the past.
    • Open Heart…. For those who are afraid to be hurt, cold, lack empathy, be more loving and compassionate, hard hearted, closed heart
    • Be Courageous……FEAR, indecisiveness, can’t make own decisions
    • Be Response-able….. Suppress fear, reckless, addictions, compulsions

They will be in 2 ounce bottles which cost…. Wholesale 19.95… retail 29.95.

Although they are not flower essences, a friend of my suggest people apply Lavender, Roman Chamomile and/or Red Mandarin to brainstem to help with OCD and GAD.

My ex husband had issues with abandonment.  He took a flower essence called Purple Monkey Flower and it worked wonderfully.

The best part about these products is they should work quickly.

  14. I once went to a lecture where the speaker said "Stress should be like violin strings" He explained no stress-pull on the violin string and you can't make music, it leaves only a dull thump... Too much and the string can snap.

I realize this is true in my life. When my grandkids were done being home schooled for the summer (I help teach them math), I just vegged a few days. No deadlines often for me, means not getting much done.

However, I am the kind of person who usually bites off more than they can chew.... And often feel like I am on the verge of the "snap".

The body's Stress mechanism response was not meant for everyday occurrence. It was meant as an emergency survival during extreme times such as a bear attack.

This constant stress urgency most people are living under now a days, takes its toll on our health and body.

Many people use yoga, listening to music, praying and meditation, alcohol or medication to cope. This might give a temporary release of the emotional aspect of stress and the first three can be very health promoting, but none of them use up the adrenaline that is released during times of stress.

The best way to release excess adrenaline is to punch on something like a firm pillow until exhaustion.

The best way to moderate the stress hormones of the adrenals is a new nano technology patch called Aeon. People are using this acupressure patch to prevent that cortisol weight gain often associated with a stressed life.

During times I feel like I might snap, I put a patch over my right adrenals and ah.... I can function without snapping again.

  15. It has been shown that parsley juice in a petri dish inhibits the growth of abnormal cells such as cancer cells.

High in Potassium it helps with

    High blood pressure

    Adrenal health

    Preventing charley horses

    Natural diuretic

    Nourishes the Kidneys

Being high in Boron, parsley is also helpful in bone health and repair.

But that is not all, parsley is high in iron, Vitamins A, B and C as well as trace minerals.

It is believed that parsley helps inhibit the body's ability to release histamines and if often use by those who suffer from respiratory allergies and sinus congestion.

Parsley is probably best know for accompanying a meal as a pretty garnish. Originally it was added to the plate because of its reputation in aiding digestion, helping with gas and because it helps deodorize.

The whole plant can be used from root to seed of this biannual plant (plant which seeds every other year). by most people.

The only known caution for this remarkable herb is for those on dialysis (because the root has strong diuretic properties and may push an already severely weak kidney) and for nursing mothers (because it can dry up breast milk).

The fresh herb is best, but encapsulized herbs are very beneficial. Commercially dried parsley flakes which are dark in color have usually been dried in a way that the herb is no longer very nutritious.

Parsley does well in container planters, therefore it can be grown indoors or on a patio.

  16. The Thyroid stimulates the release of dopamine, one of the 4 main neurotransmitters associated with OCD and GAD.

Someone emailed me and wrote… I am confused some say that cruciferous vegetables are good for hypothyroidism and some strictly restrict consume these vegetables. What is the exact answer.

People have different opinions, in part I believe because our body chemistries are all different.

I have a suggestion which may help you. I would avoid all cruciferous vegetables for 2 weeks while taking your temperature every morning before you arise in the morning and keeping a record of it.

Then add cruciferous vegetables for 2 weeks in heavy duty amounts, taking your temperature again every morning.

    Then compare the two.

If your temperatures went down at all, it indicates the vegetables were causing a strain on your thyroid. I believe is the best indicator.

I think overdoing anything can cause a problem.    And cruciferous vegetables, raw in large amounts in some, seems to pull the thyroid function down a little.

But there are such good nutrients in cruciferous vegetables, I hate for people to lose out on them unnecessarily.

    LIST OF CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES

    Arugula

    Bok choy

    Broccoli

    Brussels sprouts

    Cabbage

  17. Cruciferous Vegetables  Hypothyroid Caution

I often get people asking me if cruciferous vegetables are okay for those who are suffering from hypothyroidism and should they strictly restrict consuming these vegetables.

There are different opinions, in part I believe because our body chemistries are all different.

Personally, I would test.  I would avoid all cruciferous vegetables for 2 weeks while taking your temperature every morning before you arise in the morning and keeping a record of it.

The third week eat cruciferous vegetables for 2 weeks in heavy duty amounts, taking your temperature again every morning.

Compare the two and if your temperatures went down at all, it indicates the vegetables were causing a strain on your thyroid. I believe is the best indicator.

And cruciferous vegetables, raw in large amounts in some, seems to pull the thyroid function down a little

But there are such good nutrients in cruciferous vegetables, I hate for people to lose out on them unnecessarily.  I would eat them prudently IF they appear to put a stress on your thyroid function.

  18. The term “adaptogen” was coined by the Russian scientist N.V. Lazrev, back in 1947, when he realized that certain plants contained an unique action to increase resistance to adverse conditions.

There is no “official” definition.   It is stated that it is derived from an herb and that it isn’t a particular mineral or vitamin.  After that it gets a bit foggy.

Probably the best is that an adaptogen is a substance that demonstrates a nonspecific enhancement of the body's ability to resist a stressor.

When a plant had to survive a stressed it develops properties, that are yet to be isolated and labeled.

These plants, when taken into the body, helps the body adapt to the same type of  stressor as the plant had to overcome.

  19. I am so proud of the people who join in our webinar. They offer ideas to help each other. During some classes it feels almost like family looking out for each other. :o)

In an email after one such class a woman offered the following information. She said... "I use Nux Vomica (homeopathic) at night when thoughts prevent me from sleep and also if I get awakened at 3:00 AM" She adds "Take every 15 minutes until I fall asleep, usually 1 or 2 dosages and I am off to dreamland"

I am so fortunate that I sleep like a rock everynight, but that means I have not been able to experience the benefit myself, but since homeopathics are non addictive and non toxic I say try it if you aren't sleeping well.

If you try it, please let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the tip Debbie. :o)

  20. Through Dr. Mercola’s website, I learned of CNN’s list of best and worse of sleeping positions.

    They suggest:

The Back position is the best:

Because it helps prevent pain of back and neck, reduces the development of wrinkles and help in acid reflux.   The downside is you tend to snore.  The only position which keeps breast perky.

The Side position they say is next best:

This position is accredited with the above benefits except for the wrinkles with less.   Doctors often tell pregnant women it is the preferred position during pregnancy.

The Fetal position, not so good:

Better for snoring and during pregnancy but can lead to back and neck pain.

The Stomach position labeled the worse:

You are less likely to snoring, but it contributes to joint and muscle pressure, acid reflux, promotes wrinkles and adversely effects breast tissue.

I believe there is no ONE position which is best.  I get this wisdom from a cat we had.  For those of you who never had a cat, they snooze a lot. :o)  But they change positions often.

I was getting a discomfort in my back and hip.  I was a right side fetal sleeper.  I knew it is best to put a pillow between my knees, but my hips and back pain woke me up in the morning and lessened during the day.

I thought I would start sleeping like a cat, changing positions.  The difference was amazing.  I might have wrinkles, but I am out of pain. :o)

  21. The term “adaptogen” was coined by the Russian scientist N.V. Lazrev, back in 1947, when he realized that certain plants contained an unique action to increase resistance to adverse conditions.

    So what is an Adaptogen?

It is so frustrating trying to find a solid, clear definition of an adaptogen.   It is stated that it is derived from an herb and that it isn’t a particular mineral or vitamin.  After that it gets a bit foggy.

The best definition that I could find of an adaptogen is a substance that demonstrates a nonspecific enhancement of the body's ability to resist a stressor.

This is my best understanding of what an adaptogen is.   A plant had to survive a stressed environment and in doing so it develop properties, that are yet to be isolated and labeled.

These plants, when taken into the body, helps the body adapt to the same type of  stressor as the plant had to overcome.

  22. Making your own almond milk

Almonds, I believe are a much better source for milk than soy.   It can be expensive, but many people save a little by making the almond milk themselves.

A friend of mine, an amazing woman, gave me this recipe and said it was fine to pass it along.

Soak almonds overnight.  You then take 3 oz of soaked almonds blend in 5 oz of water with a little maple syrup and vanilla.   Blend until smooth.   Use on cereal, on fruit or to drink.

  23. Since it takes 14 capsules to equal 1 capsule of flaxseed oil, it is more economical to use the non-capsule form. But there are a few things to keep in mind.

First make sure the flaxseed oil is treated and protected with an antioxidant such as vitamin E. The taste is less than desirable and unfortunately it doesn’t come cherry flavored. :o) But there are ways to mask the taste.

Take 8 ounces of flaxseed oil and blend with ½ pound of butter.

Puree it thoroughly. It will be the consistency of margarine and can be used on bread, noodles or vegetables etc.

Keep refrigerated and in an air tight container.

Do not use in cooking. Heat destroys the effectiveness of the oil.

I put 4 ounces of flaxseed oil in my salad dressing and then eat my salad with a spoon to get all the vinegar and oil.

My daughter dribbles flaxseed on her kid’s eggs. Some mix it in cooked oatmeal before they eat it.

Put in a smoothie is an excellent way as well. Flaxseed oil is so beneficial, so please don’t let the taste keep you from this excellent supplement. Hopefully the above suggestions will help.

  24. As people start feeling better, their first thought often is to stop the medication.  This can be very unwise and quite dangerous.   I strongly suggest only go off medicines with the help of your doctor.

Healing the body with herbs and diet take a long time, therefore sometimes medicines are necessary.   Sadly there are not enough studies about possible interactions between herbs, supplements and medicines.   Even sadder is the fact that some of the medicines cause the body to be dependant and/or addicted.

Even if a person is weaned off certain medication correctly, addictive withdrawal symptoms are experienced.

Making sure the body is ready and strong is the best idea.  I suggest using the lifewave patches, and/or Lobelia, Chinese Stress Relief, Super Omega 3 oils and Tahitian Morinda.

  25. I have a few articles on my sites about adrenals and what nourishes them… sodium, potassium, B-5, Chromium etc… But I wanted to add something I learned recently  I  read somewhere lately that Geranium aromatherapy is helpful in stimulating the adrenals.

    Adrenal exhaustion symptoms include:

    • Not being able to get to sleep at a decent hour
    • Having a hard time waking up in the morning
    • Need of coffee, tea, or caffeine to get moving in the morning
    • Being tired upon exertions or activity
    • Need to consume coffee, tea, salt, sugar or caffeine to keep up stamina

Aeon patch over the adrenals also help with adrenal fatigue… More on that as the information comes in.

  26. At my insomnia class, someone offered her solution and I thought I should put it on here.   If you try it, please let me know how it worked fr you.

I use Nux Vomica at night when thoughts prevent me from sleeping. And also if I awaken at 3 AM . I keep my trusted Nux in the drawer of my night stand( so that I don’t have to get out of bed and also away from anything electrical ) and take every 15 minutes until I fall asleep. Usually one or two doses will send me off to dreamland.

Thank you for the tip Debbie.

  27. An amazing man and one of my few heros Jack LaLane died today at the age of 96.  Up until the end he was juicing and exercising, blogging and promoting health.

He started 81 years ago at 15, excercising and changing his then very poor diet.   Out of tribute for him today I want to talk about exercise.  I am not a couch potato, actually I don't even own a couch. :o)  But I am horrible at exercise, I eat well, I take supplements, I don't take poisons into my body.   But without the exercise my health is only a fraction of what it should be.

I have become a office chair jockey.   The only muscles I flex are the part of my legs that scoots me from one part to the other while my butt is asleep in the chair.

Daily exercise is so good for you.  It moves lymph, helps eliviate mild stress, oxinates the brain and organs.  Helps peristalic action of the digestive system.....

Time is my hold back.   But I am going to try to MAKE the time from now on and encourage you to do the same.

  28. Addiction from Prescribed Medicines

Sometimes medicines are necessary.  Once when I was in the hospital, every hour the nurse came in to give me a pain shot.   The only thing was, I wasn't really in pain.   The doctor had prescribed it just incase I would experience pain and the initially was going to give it to me until I questioned the need.  Even sadder is the fact that some of the medicines cause the body to be dependant and/or addicted.

More and more people are turning to herbs, and as they start feeling better, their first thought often is to stop the medication.  This can be very unwise and quite dangerous.   I strongly suggest only go off medicines with the help of your doctor.

Even if a person is weaned off certain medication correctly, addictive withdrawal symptoms are experienced.  As a matter of fact I know people who still feel withdrawl symptoms as long as 5 years after being weaned off.

Short term Distress Remedy might be helpful.   Long term, I suggest Lobelia, Chinese Stress Relief, Super Omega 3 oils and Tahitian Morinda.

Plenty of water and exercise is also reported to be very helpful.  Ultimately I would avoid any unnecessary medicines in the first place.

  29. Oh, say, what is truth?  That song is what came to my mind when I read an article today called “What Causes ADHD?  Myths and Facts” written by experts in their field.   Mostly doctors.

Under the section hyperactivity and sugar… they wrote…..”Parents often blame sugar for a child’s hyperactive behavior, but it’s time to stop.  “The overwhelming number of studies have not been able to demonstrate behavior changes due to sugar consumption in children”.

Well my son should have been in one of those studies.   Although sugar may not effect ALL hyperactive children, after living with my son for 16 years, I know for a fact that at least one was.

It amazes me that studies can be so flawed…. Not just this one but so many…. One study will prove one thing while another study will prove the opposite.

So how do we know what is truth?   In part I would use common sense, I would educate myself with basic physics, I would research things and I would look at the studies but as only 1 part of helps me make my decision.

I would then keep a journal, tract how you feel to what you have done… See what is true for you, and how you react to things.  Do you own personal study.

  30. It is said that Paxil manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline has lawsuit settlements which have racked up a bill of 1 BILLION dollars… The suits include suicides, attempted suicides and addiction.

There are also numerous suits for birth defects of babies born to mother’s taking this product during their pregnancy.

The birth defects include Malformation, lung defects and several different kinds of heart defects.

If I was a woman of child baring age, I would not take paxil… If I was already on paxil, I would ask my doctor to slowly wean me off and work with it natural modalities.

It is estimated that the lawsuit bill could reach 1.6 BILLION dollars, lives lost and ruined… why isn’t this hitting front page news?   How many women and babies are at risk who never heard of the lawsuit?   Something is definitely wrong with the information we are getting.

  31. Fruit has so many good things in them… Minerals, Vitamins, Antioxidants, Cancer preventative properties, etc.   It can also help detox the body.

I once took a class on food combining which covered how best to eat fruits, then recently was sent an article from a friend on it.

It is said 3 to 5 fruits a day for the average healthy person…. But how you eat your fruit is perhaps even more important than how many… For instance ALL fruits should be eaten on an empty stomach, so it digests instead of rots.

It should be eaten raw or if you juice, freshly juiced so you benefit from the live enzymes which die shortly after juice is extracted and/or during the cooking process.

When you juice you should mix it thoroughly with saliva before you swallow, to help with the digestion process and get maximum nutrients otherwise lost.

A wide variety is best and various colors.    It is best to eat warm climate fruits in the summer and cold climate fruits in the winter if you live in the north, so the fruit doesn’t thin you blood.

It is also best to eat sweet fruits and sour fruits separately and as most herbalist say... “Eat Melons alone or leave them alone”.

  32. Water and Plastic Bottles… So much to consider

Some people say the esterols from plastic water containers are worse for you than soda.   This seems absurd to me considering soda is typically sold in plastic or aluminum.   However, not all water is equal, nor is all plastic containers created equal.

Distilled water pulls out too many minerals and oxygen from the body and kidneys.   But it usually has no bacteria.  It usually has a neutral pH.

Bottled water usually doesn’t have the negative effects found in distilled water, but often contains chlorine and fluoride.  Some are reported to be mere tap water.  The real negative effect of bottled water is that bacteria can breed.  The pH can be either acidic, neutral or alkaline depending on the impurities.

R.O. (Reverse Osmosis) water is I believe the best… But make sure you get the kind that fluoride has been filtered out… not all units do.  The high oxygen content does make it a little acidic… which actually tends to inhibit bacterial growth.

But any kind of water quality can be tainted by the container it is stored in.

Now a day on the bottom of plastic containers a recycle code can be found.  It is only an imprint so it can be difficult to read at times.     This code indicates the recyclability of the plastic which in part is determined by the resin and chemicals used in the plastic.   The same substance which indicates how easily the plastic can be recycled can also help determine the likelihood of impurities leaching from the bottle into the liquid it stores.

PolyEthylene TerEphtalate, aka PETE or PET.   Most common disposable bottle, usually clear, has a porous surface which allows bacteria to accumulate.   Environmental Science and Pollution Research discovered the leaching a hormonally active chemical in water stored with this plastic.   Because of this, reusing bottles can allow bacteria to breed.  Not suggested for reuse.  Typically curbside recyclable.

High Density PolyEthylene, aka HDPE.  Commonly used for milk jugs, butter tubs, detergent bottles, and toiletries bottles.  Usually this opaque (blocking light) plastic is at risk of leaching.  Typically curbside recyclable.

PolyVinyl Chloride, aka PVC. Most commonly used for food wrap, cooking oil bottles, and plumbing pipes.  Usually a plastic since it contains phthalates which can affect hormonal receptors and development.   NEVER use when heating or cooking food and drink, especially in a microwave oven.   Typically curbside recyclable.

Low Density PolyEthylene, aka (LDPE).  Commonly used for grocery bags, bread bags, food wraps, and squeezable bottles.  Rarely accepted by curbside recycling.

Polypropylene.  Most commonly used for wide necked containers such as yogurt cups and medicine bottles.  Also found in straws, ketchup bottles and syrup bottles.  This plastic generally accepted as safe.  Increase accepted by, and is increasingly being accepted by curbside recycling.

Polystyrene, aka Styrofoam. Used for disposable containers and packages such as plates and cups.   The toxic chemicals leaching from this type of plastic is extremely worrisome.   NEVER let it touch food.. Do not use to heat up water or anything which will be ingested.   Not accepted by curbside recycling.

All other plastics.   Polycarbonate,  BPA Known as the worse of the worse in plastics, etc.  Commonly used in heavy duty plastic products such as: computers, stain resistant storage containers, etc.  But the fact is you don’t know exactly which plastic it is.   I would NEVER use it associated with drink or food in any way.   Not accepted by curbside recycling.

In general, heating or freezing in containers increase the leaching levels.

When first introduced plastic was considered totally safe.  Now we know differently, but what could be in the other plastics that we don’t know about yet?

SO what should a person use?    My first choice would be glass.  If that isn’t possible, I would only use recyclable plastics #4 and #5 for reusable containers… and #1 in a “one time”, “in a pinch” scenario.

  33. There are advantages disadvantages of medication and herbs.

Medicine usually produces faster results, while herbs often take months to see the same results.

You don’t have to choke down foul tasting tea or large amount of capsules when you go the conventional route, that you have to going natural.

However ALL medicines are tissue and liver toxic and can cause an array of side effects, Herbs?  Typically nourish or help cleanse the body and produce side benefits.

The Holistic approach helps set the body in correct frame and function, while Allopathic approach  poisons, dulls or stimulates the body functions.

BUT NOW…. Modern technology has combined the best of both concepts.   Lifewave Pain Patches homeopathic and amino acid base product help improve the energy and function in the body.  It is applied topically to pain or acupuncture points, nothing it consumed or absorbed.

I like most other people report a 80% reduction of pain within a 2 to 3 minutes.  Nothing in my 20+ years of studying natural modalities, I have never been more impressed.

  34. When Anxiety Hits.... The Adrenal Connection

Anxiety, Panic attacks, Depression, General Anxiety Disorder or GAD often accompanies OCD.   If you understand the cause it is easy to see why.

There are glands which sit on top of each of your kidneys called adrenal glands.   During times of stress, these glands go into a primitive survival mode.  They produce adrenaline to help you fight or flee from the stressor.  However, most of our stressors today are not something like a bear, which we can fight or run away from to protect our lives; rather they are bosses, co-workers, teenagers, spouses, bill collectors etc.

Instead of the adrenaline going to the muscles where it is used up and discarded by the body, the adrenaline dwells within the body, often attacking the coating of the nerves (aka myelin sheathing).

If this process happens long or often enough, the myelin becomes very thin and the adrenals tend to stay in continuous defense mode.  Therefore every little stressor can cause the feeling of extreme panic or anxiety.

There are other factors to consider....

    • Coffee, tea and caffeine... over-stimulate the adrenals, keeping them in an already agitated state
    • Lack of nutrients especially potassium, sodium, B-complex and fatty acids...which help soothe the adrenals
    • Video games and adrenaline-provoking movies can play havoc on a weakened adrenal

Avoiding STRESS and the above insults to the adrenals are necessary, but there are other avenues which can help.

    • Natural sodium (found in cucumbers, cabbage, and slippery elm).... not NaCl or salt... helps soothe the adrenals and gets the message across that the danger has past
    • Potassium (found in parsley) ...  also helps soothe the adrenals
    • B-complex (made by the body, not the supplemental form) ... appears to lessen the over-stimulation to the adrenals during time of stress.   Probiotic Eleven is probably the very best source of the bacillius which, when populated in the intestine, produces natural B vitamins..... Caution:  isolated Bs, found in vitamin tablets, can increase anxiety
When under prolonged anxiety and stress, the adrenals can become burnt out, often causing depression and fatigue.  Mood Elevator is probably my very favorite nutritionally supportive combination for the adrenals
  35. The Powerful Probiotic

In your intestine there are beneficial bacteria aka good bacteria or friendly flora, etc.

Due to antibiotic… either prescribed or those found in some can foods and commercially raised meat, many of the friendly bacteria can be killed off

To remedy this people often take billions of these bacteria in a supplement form.

The benefits of taking a probiotic are numerous.    They aid in digestion, help in preventing yeast overgrowth and aid in immunity.

The bacteria in the probiotic also excretes B vitamins.   Unlike B Vitamins supplements, those produced by the body rarely if ever cause an adverse reaction.

Many people use yogurt in hopes to increase the friendly bacteria in their intestine.   But often the HCL (Hydrochloric Acid) kills most of the bacteria before they can reach the intestine where they are to reside.

Therefore, I strongly suggest probiotics that labeled enteric coated.  Enteric coating does not break down in the stomach, but rather in the intestine.

I believe in taking a full spectrum probiotic, because different strains provide different benefits.   My VERY favorite is a product called Probiotic 11.

  36. Stop before you take fatty supplements, read this article first!

There are many people who are taking oil based supplements such as: Vitamins A, D, E and K as well as Flax seed oil, Evening Primrose oils, Black currant oil etc., are not getting the full benefit from them.

Actually they can cause stress on the liver. They are also more likely to be toxic (vitamins) and can lead to a fatty liver. The reason for this is that these supplements are oil soluble and the blood is water soluble. To understand this, think about trying to wash oil off of a pan. The water can't transport the oil. What is needed is a soap such as dawn dish detergent to emulsify (make the oil particles smaller), so that the water can wash away the oil. So it is with the blood and oil supplements.

To remedy this, I suggest that you take oil soluble supplements with a protein so it encourages the liver to produce bile salts (much like dawn dish detergent) which will then help emulsify the oils, so the blood can transport them to the tissue instead of settling in the liver.

Good sources of protein are: Nuts, Seeds, Legumes/ Beans, Eggs, Avocadoes, Fish and Meats.

  37. Interesting Brain Facts

Dr. Amen is an amazing man and teacher..  I was privileged of attending one of his lectures.

Here are a few interesting facts about the brain:

What is good for your heart is also good for your brain.

    Broccoli contains 40% protein.

Walnuts contain 3X the amount of fats as does Almonds.

Fat stores toxic materials.  As one loses body fat, these toxins are released into the system, so it is imperative to consume a lot of fiber and keep the bowels moving, so not to reabsorb those toxins.

New brain cells live 4 weeks and will die unless they are stimulated by use (intellectual or analytical thought)

Things which poison the brain include: Alcohol, caffeine, painting, Tylenol, pain meds, nutra sweet, MSG, etc.

Supplements good for the brain are Gingko, sage, huperazine, omega oils, walnuts, pecans, gotu kola

Sleep, exercise, music therapy helps in brain repair.

The brain is composed mostly of fats and water.   Sometimes when a person is feeling muddled or even some head aches are cause by dehydration.

  38. My friend sent me this in an email.  You might have seen it before, but I think it is cool.  It is amazing how the brain works.  We only used between 3 and 7% of our brains capacity.

I couldn’t believe that I could actually understand what I was reading.  The phenomenal power of the human mind, according to a researcher at Cambridge University, it doesn’t’ matter what the order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and the last letter be in the right place.  The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem.   This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole… Amazing huh?

  39. Inositol and B Vitamins a double edge sword

Many people who take Inositol and B Vitamins notice an improvement in their nerve’s health.  However, even more  people who symptoms has worsen and anxiety develop when they consume these same products.

Part of the problem is methylation and part of it is lacking fatty acids.   Some people after they build up their myelin and fatty acid reserve can take those  nutrients… Some people need to take the nutrients to help the body regulate methylation.

So although these nutrients are good for the nervous system, please keep in mind it can be a double edge sword.

  40. Glutathione is gaining the reputation of being the Mother of ALL anti oxidants and is believed to help with almost every health condition.

This major detoxifier helps the brain, liver function, kidneys, basically every function of the body.

As we age we lose the ability to produce our own glutathione.   Lifewave patches provides the benefits of glutathione in the body not just a few minutes like pills, but up to 18 hours.

In addtion to the patches, I suggest sulfur foods such as onions, garlic, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and whey protein.. (Non denatured protein, organic milk source)

Research indicates that Glutathioine is perhaps one of THE most important nutrient in a healthy body.

To order click on Glutathione patches.

  41. Mercury Brain Flush

While looking for ideas for I found a mercury brain flush from a class I attended.

I know some people associate many health conditions on mercury toxicity, anything from Anxiety to Yeast overgrowth.

So I am putting this protocol on today’s blog, I am not well experienced with it, but the person who taught the class has a “impeccable” reputation as a naturopath.

She especially recommended immediately after having amalgam (mercury) fillings removed.

NOTE:  Use Vitamin C ascorbates so not to cause an electrolyte imbalance.  A person in a weakened state, have severe GERD or lacking minerals should consult a competent health professional before proceeding.

Step #1   Star with 1000 mg Vitamin C Ascorbates in 2 oz of water (you can mix in a few ounces of orange juice to help make palatable).

Step #2   Every 30 minutes, repeat the dosage until you have a watery , dare I say explosive, stool flush. (so stay short shot from a commode).  When you get to that level stop the Vitamin C for that day.

Step #3 Keep track of the milligrams of Vitamin it took to get to the watery stool.  The next day, if you got the diarrhea at 10,000 mg, then back down by 1000 or 2000 so you are staying at bowel tolerance or in other words, just under diarrhea level.

CAUTION:   Do not take the amount that would give you more than 1 movement of water… Diarrhea can cause you to lose too many minerals which can be dangerous.

Step #4 Stay on this bowel tolerance level for 1 month and then repeat a few days every month.

For those who try it, are reported to have lowered levels of mercury in their blood and hair analysis.

  42. UNDER- methylation (keeps turning things off) 45% of population  Histadelia

    Symptoms of:

    • Seasonal allergies
    • OCD
    • Perfectionism
    • High libido
    • Sparse body hair
    • Blood test indicators
    • High Histamine Levels (blood test would indicate levels – healthy level 40-70 mcg/dL) and absolute basophils (a type of white blood cell involved in immune response)
    • Low levels of serotonin, dopamine, Norepinephrine  (Neurotransmitters)

    Food and supplements which help.

    • Omega 3 Oil
    • Calcium
    • Magnesium

    • B-6
    • Folate
    • B-12 (methylcobalamin form - sublingual)
    • Choloine
    • Inositol

    • Methionine
    • Glutathione
    • Taurine

    • Vitamin A, C and E
    • Zinc

    • DMG
    • MSM

    • SAMe

    Supplements to avoid

    •  Folic acid

Methionine is an Amino acid derived from proteins.   Your body should be able to convert Methionine along with magnesium into SAMe.

After the delivery of Methyl by the SAMe, it becomes homocysteine. And if homocysteine is then attached to a methyl it turnes back into methionine.

Difficult to follow for me.. What I get of it, is that there is a healthy cycle of methylation.  But deficiencies can disrupt the cycle and that can be a real problem…. It can effect how you handle nutrients, It can raise your homocysteine, which  in excess is a major strain on your overall health.

Bottom line….. Know your levels…. Determine if you are over or under methylation before you start taking supplements.   I am going to put up 2 questionnaires to help determine if you are under or over methylated using symptomology.

This will not replace a blood test but will give a little insight for those who may not have insurance or ability to go to a doctor.

As a base for any health problem, especially in the methylation cycle…Enzymes are critical!!!   I also suggest enteric coated probiotics, a diet rich in organic vegetables/ fruits and healthy fatty acids/ proteins.

  43. There are a growing number of people who seem to have methylation problems.   I finally had the time to do enough research on the subject to begin to understand it.

Methylation – type of chemical reactions in the body.   These reactions help with detoxing, and balancing  neurotransmitters such as serotonin and melatonin, etc.

An estimated 40% of all people’s body keep these chemical reactions balanced, while 45% are under-methylated and 15% are over methylated.

It is a concern when this chemical reaction is not happening enough or too much.  And that is what today’s blog is about.

I have to admit, I do not have my mind totally wrapped around this set of processes in the body.   But hopefully what I do know will be of help to you.

  44. Orthorexia Nervosa…. Sounds like a scary diagnosis, does it not?   Let’s break it down….Orthorexia in Latin means…. “Correct or right”…. Nervousa means “appetite”

A doctor in Colorado named Steven Bratman is the father of and named  this hideous sounding disease…..   He noticed that people are starting to avoid chemicals and pesticides and “eat more correctly”.

    The Bratman Test for Orthorexia

    - Do you spend more than 3 hours a day thinking about your diet?

    - Do you plan your meals several days ahead?

    - Is the nutritional value of your meal more important than the pleasure of eating it?

    - Has the quality of your life decreased as the quality of your diet has increased?

    - Have you become stricter with yourself lately?

    - Does your self-esteem get a boost from eating healthily?

    - Have you given up foods you used to enjoy in order to eat the ‘right’ foods

    - Does your diet make it difficult for you to eat out, distancing you from family and friends?

    - Do you feel guilty when you stray from your diet?

    - Do you feel at peace with yourself and in total control when you eat healthily?

I know a few health conscious people who might answer “yes”: to most if not all of the questions.   But these people are strong, healthy, happy and well adjusted.

Actually I answer “yes” to 5 of them myself… But I do have peppermint patties and pizza once in a while, just not to get overly consumed in this mental disease. :o)

Seriously, someone can obsessed with anything.   It is so hard to know about eating healthy because it is a smart way to live your life.  The more unhealthy you have been, often the less you can tolerate poor diet indiscretions.

What concerns me about all this is the chance of doctor’s starting to use it every time a patient of theirs wants to change his diet to help improve his health and that people will stop taking their health into their own hands so they will not be labeled with this so called “mental disorder”.

I think the true gauge of whether your diet has gone overboard is if you feel you are no longer in control or if it is weakening your overall health rather than improving it.

  45. Excitotoxins are altered amino acids often added to foods as a Food Enhancer

They enhance flavor because they alter brain perception.

The most common excitotoxins are Glutamate, aspartate, and cysteine

Cells in our brains have receptor sites that these excitotoxins attach to causing the neuron’s to fire rapidly to the point of exhaustion which then causes the cells to die.

The result can be brain damage, the larger the consumption, the more profound the damage.

The damage is accumulative… slow and subtle… but over years it can be dramatic.

Some people especially with thin myelin or lacking fatty acids are particularly vulnerable to these chemicals.

I believe it is wise to avoid all excitotoxins especially MSG and NutraSweet.

MSG Mono Sodium Glutamate, aka  Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, soy protein, soy isolates, soy protein concentrates, caseinate, autolyzed yeast extract or natural flavoring.

Aspartame aka NutraSweet is another food additive to sweeten.

This blog is by means not a comprehensive article, that was not my intention, it is to inform you of the possible dangers of these chemicals.  I strongly encourage you to research on.
  46. Instinctively all animals crave contact.   Puppies will pile on top of each other to sleep on even the hottest of days.  It is not the warmth alone they seek but the connection.  I saw a documentary where an experiment was conducted using a baby monkey with 2 fake mothers… One was made of cold, hard steel, which dispensed food, the other was more lifelike but was incapable of providing food..

The baby monkey would go to the one resembling the real mother even when hungry.

They also showed baby monkeys deprived of all physical contact (which I thought was so cruel) and the baby monkeys slowly declined in health and alertness.   They just look like they were fading away.

The medical profession also has discovered that premature baby’s survival rate increases when they are caressed and touched.

We as a society do not touch enough…. So many people have lost the ability to give a proper hug.  They hold back, they get stiff; they do not exchange a genuine sharing of themselves.

I think we are losing the ability to share space with another because slowly we have equated touch with sex…. There are so many pure, platonic touches.   Touch can heal both physically as well as emotionally.

Although a loving human contact is the best, if you have no one close to share touch with, get a message.  Buy a puppy or kitten.

If you have gone a day without truly sharing touch with another, that is entirely too long.

I hope that every who reads this learns to hug more..  Connect…dare to look into another’s eyes while you talk to them, offer a smile quickly to a stranger or even a "Hi".

We might be more emotional evolved than a primate, but without touch we too like the poor deprived monkeys, will notice a part of us will begin to fade away.

  47. Basic good diet

No matter what health concern you are addressing, a base of a good diet is essential.

Water – The rule taught in most health food class is ½ your bodyweight in ounces of water.  Example:  If you weigh 150 pounds 75 ounces of water would be what most herbalist would suggest.

Protein – Supply of amino acids and base for muscles.

    • Nuts (except peanuts)

  48. Hoarding an obsession shared by over 3 million people marked by the accumulation of excessive clutter, i.e. keeping items including those which are worthless or unneeded.

The side effect of hoarding includes confusion or overwhelming feeling due to too much stimuli, a feeling of congestion of thoughts, actions and emotions also often occurs.

There is a debate over whether hoarding is just a mental illness or a type of OCD.   I believe it to be an emotional driven type of OCD.

Often those who hoard feel they will lose the memory that was attached to an object, or feel they are letting go of a part of themselves, or they may be deprived of it in the future because of giving it away, or feel guilty about wasting something.

    How to combat this condition?

As a person overcomes the cause of their OCD (for example, the myelin is now releasing enough neurotransmitters) they are then faced with the overwhelming task of tackling the mounds of residue left over from their condition.

    Helpful hints:

    • Commission someone to help you.  There are professional organizers who do this for a fee
    • Do it is small spurts… 30 min a day
    • Do common rooms first… One room at a time.
    • It is sometimes easier to donate your stuff instead of putting them into the garbage.
    • Put things in 3 piles..
    1.  That which you have to definitely keep
    2.  That which you can donate
    3.  A Maybe pile.

After you have been through all the stuff…. Put the definite "Keepers" way in their proper place, dropped off what you are going to donate and  re-examine the "Maybe" pile.

Some people even say put the "Maybe" pile in a room and if you haven’t needed to find something in that pile in 6 months to just donate it all.

Hoarding is common…. My father had our basement filled to the max… Through a lot of conflict, my mother was able to make him confine it to there.

I have a dear friend who hoard and later became so constipated in her emotions and actions that she lost her job, home, and finally freedom to live outside of an institution.    So I know that being a “pack rat” can have devastating effects.

But to stop the need to hoard, I believe working with the myelin is the first step.

  49. An email I got the other day has spurred today’s blog entry….

    Q.  I was reading some information you wrote about how to cure OCD.  You mentioned if a person's cholesterol is low, ideally it should be at or over 170 for the ability to repair.  Can you tell me how to raise my cholesterol?

    A.   It is your liver which produces cholesterol.  I would suggest Liver Cleanse formula in aggressive amounts. --->  aggressive amounts. I would also avoid unnecessary medicines especially those like tylenol and chemicals.  Asparagus, Zucchini and Dandelion are nourishing to the liver.

    Q.   Also, would it be helpful for me to take an Omega 3 & 6 combined oil to help cure this?

    A.  Omega oils help compensate for low cholesterol..  The body can use fatty acids as a substitute for some of the cholesterol jobs.  However I strongly suggest you take them with a liver and in a prudent amount, so not to put a stress on the liver.

  53. GLA - Gama Linolenic Acid was first isolated from Evening Primrose oil.  Even better sources are  Borage Oil, and Black Currant Oil

If the body is healthy, it should be able to convert linoleic acid better known as Omega 6 oil into GLA.

Most diets already contain an ample supply of Omega 6. It is important to take Omega 3 oils when consuming isolated GLA, because the body might convert GLA into bad eicosanoids unless there is an adequate amount of EPA from the Omega 3.

These eicosandoids can contribute to inflammation, high blood pressure and lowered immune response.

However GLA with EPA helps reduce inflammation, and nerve pain in those who have neuropathy..  It is also shows promise as a vessel dilator, anti coagulant, PMS, arthritis, cardiac disease and retaining young looking skin.

A study on estrogen effected breast cancer show that woman taking GLA responded better when taking tamoxifen.

  54. Conjugated Linoleic Acid

CLA is found in butter and in the meat of outdoor grazed cow and lamb.

The “C” in CLA stands for “conjugated” which means nothing more than the chain of carbons has a double bond a single bond and then another double bond.

Studies show this fatty acid preserved muscle tissue while reducing fat in people (especially those suffering with hypothyroidism) trying to lose weight and tummy fat.

The amount they used was 3.4 grams of CLA.

Studies indicate that CLA can help reduce food allergies and enhance the immune system.  It is also believed to prevent cancer, lowering insulin resistance, triglycerides and cholesterol.

  55. ALA– Alpha Linolenic Acid

Also known as - Lipoic Acid, Thioctic Acid and Thiotic Acid.

All Fatty acids are made up of a chain of carbons which have attached to it Hydrogen and Oxygen molecules.

The Carbons which are linked resembling a charm bracelet and the Hydrogens and Oxygens like the charms attached to each of the chain’s link.   Some of the links have a double bond attachment.

Since the first double bond of ALA is the 3rd Carbon from the N end.  Therefore it is of the Omega 3 oil clan. For more on Omega 3, 6 and 9 oils go to this link à http://www.naturesherbs.biz/efaomegaoils

ALA Found primarily in vegetable oils, green leafy vegetables and seeds.

A healthy body should be able to convert ALA into a sufficient amount of DHA and EPA.

Supplements used as the raw materials for ALA are:  Flaxseed and Black Currant Oil and Spirulina….. Raw Materials Listed Above à Omega 3 à Linoleic Acid à ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid) à DHA or EPA

ALA has been used to help normalize cholesterol and blood pressure.  It shows promise in protecting against cardiac arrhythmia and lower risk of cardiovascular disease.  It helps pull excess iron, copper and heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead.

ALA also is being used to help lower blood sugar and aid in helping neuropathy.

Since it can easily pass the blood brain barrier it is not surprising that it is shown to help improve brain and nerve tissue, and has potential of healing the brain after a stroke, for MS, Parkinson’s and ADD.

It helps extend and recycle Vitamin C, Glutathione, COQ10 and Vitamin E.

Medicine Precautions….  Please let your doctor know when you are taking ALA, because it can lower blood sugar and can affect thyroid hormones levels, medicine for both may have to be adjusted.

  56. People who try to build their myelin or soothe their adrenals and still drink caffeine, coffee and regular tea (not most herbal teas) do not get the results that those who quit them get.

When I tell people how these drinks can over stimulate the adrenals to the point of exhaustion, thin their myelin and drain out their B vitamins, their countenance usually collapse and they say.... But how will I get moving in the morning... or I won't last the whole day..... or I need the energy.

Ultimately a health body has even more energy than a weakened body being beaten to death with caffeine stimulants.  If you abstain from caffeine and nourish your body long enough you probably will get to the point where you no longer need your cup of java.

But how do you survive the interval between now and peak health? Until recently I could only tell people my... It won't last for ever and is best for you overall, speech. But NOW. :o)   There is a homeopathic patch called Energy Enhance, that helps open the chi or energy in the body, without artificially stimulating the adrenals burning them out.

They appear to be totally non addictive and I believe provides real promise for those who need to kick the caffeine addiction.

The days I need oodles of energy I put the white patch on my right and the brown on my left wrist....And I am good to go.... and go.

You can also put them on the chest. (Email for Chart)... and then take them off about 30 min before you want to go to sleep.

They are not necessary to take in the healing of the myelin or adrenals.... they just help until your body can be healthy enough to generate all the natural energy you need.

  57. How in the world do I know which is best?   I have been an herbalist since 1990, and I still sometimes need a score card on the Fatty acids line-up.

Over the next few weeks I am going take the ALA, DHA, EPA and GLA and explore the advantages of one over the other for various health conditions.  They overlap and can be confusing.. But I will try my best to make it clear.

EFA (also known as Vitamin F) stands for Essential Fatty Acids… This means it is “Essential” the product has to be consumed, because the body can not produce it entirely.  They are also fats which are used for biological process and building instead a storage unit for energy.

Most people are frightened into lowering their cholesterol and lowering their fat intake at all cost, but the primary fuel of the heart is FATS. Cholesterol is also important to the body.

Triglycerides are a different story… 3 fats attached to a single glycerin molecule is a byproduct of poor digestion and can contribute the development of clots and indicates that the liver is unable to aid properly with the digestion of sugars and fats.

Join us next week when as we start taking each of the vitally important fat nutrients one by one.

MS - a Preventable Disease Lack of sunlight and poor diet causing increase in multiple sclerosis (MS) in Australia and high latitude countries

    Associate Professor Peter Dingle
    Environmental and Nutritional Toxicologist
    School of Environmental Science
    Murdoch University
    Murdoch  WA 6150,  Australia

Just over a year ago, a student of mine motivated me to look into Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Bruce put up a slide quoting the official authorities saying there was no link between MS and nutrition. He then presented a slide with more than 40 peer reviewed scientific papers on the link between MS and nutrition.

Together with Bruce, I am continually confused as to why such supposed authorities continue to deny the existence of nutritional treatments and, even worse, the role of poor nutrition in causing disease.

Since that slide inspired me, I have now seen dozens of people suffering from MS begin a new life through really simple changes in nutrition - and one of the simplest changes follows on from one of my earlier articles on vitamin D. Many Australians just don't get enough sun anymore. But more on that later. What is even more important is that this information can help prevent the development of MS in the beginning.

There is now overwhelming evidence that the risk of developing MS is linked to a number of environmental factors such as excessive dietary intake of saturated fats and deficiencies in polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamin D and antioxidants (1,2). As a result of these findings, good nutrition appears critical in limiting the development and ongoing effects of MS and enhancing the quality of life, while limiting the risk of secondary conditions (3).

Over the past 200 years, MS has significantly increased in incidence and prevalence. MS is a disease that affects an estimated 2.5 million people worldwide with over 18, 000 people in Australia with the disease; the incidence rate in Australia is increasing by 7% each year and financially costs approximately 2 billion dollars each year (4). It is twice as common in females as in males (females have lower vitamin D levels than males), and is the most frequently occurring neurodegenerative disease in young adults (5,1). Geographically, MS is common across northern Europe, Scandinavia and across the US and is much higher in incidence among whites then other racial groups (5). The disease is very rare in Japan, the Indian subcontinent and is unknown to black Africans. However, these groups are at significant risk of developing MS when they go to other places to live, which supports the concept that an environmental factor is responsible for the disease (5).

MS is a chronic, degenerative and autoimmune initiated inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, which may involve the brain, optic nerve or spinal cord and is characterised by demyelination (5). That is, the myelin that wraps around and insulates the nerve axons in the central nervous system suffers self destruction and degeneration (7). This means damaged myelin results in damaged nerve axons and causes the various disabilities of MS(7). It is worth noting here that myelin is around 80% lipids (fats), and cholesterol (which I have written on in past articles in NOVA) makes up an indispensable component of myelin membranes (8). The inflammatory reactions are poorly controlled and result in substantial damage to the myelin(7). As a result of demyelination, MS patients suffer functional impairments such as abnormal walking mechanics, poor balance, muscle weakness and fatigue, which result in reduced ability to perform daily activities(9).

The single most important factor linked to the development of MS is a reduced supply of vitamin D (7), which I have written on extensively in the past. Research has shown that the active hormonal form of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin, is a natural immune system regulator with anti-inflammatory action (10). We receive vitamin D from two sources, diet and sunshine, but it is considered that diet provides insignificant amounts and so sensible exposure to sunlight is considered the most effective source (11). Even Scandinavian diets (rich in oily fish) scarcely exceed a few hundred IU/d of vitamin D (12).

Sunshine is thus the principal natural source of vitamin D, providing approximately 90% of requirements.

Sunbathing can provide 10,000-20,000 IU in 15 to 30 minutes, but this will only last a few weeks before it needs to be replenished (13,14). It is interesting to note that women generally have lower serum levels than men (15,16) and have significantly higher levels of MS.

There is a 41% decrease in MS risk for every 50 nanomoles per liter increase in vitamin D (1,25-hydroxyvitamin) in the blood. The prevalence of MS is highest where environmental supplies of vitamin D are lowest (18).

There is significant epidemiological data from Australia that shows a very strong correlation between vitamin D supply from ultraviolet (UV) radiation and MS prevalence (7). The correlation is indeed stronger than that of UV radiation exposure and melanoma development (7). Globally, countries of high latitudes with insufficient UV radiation for most of the year report a higher incidence of MS (19,20). One case control study has also shown that vitamin D status in individuals at the time of diagnosis of MS is significantly lower then healthy controls, indicating a further link (19).

It is theorised that vitamin D deficiencies may lead to an increase in T-helper cell autoimmune responses, thereby resulting in excessive damage to the myelin and MS symptoms (21).

Vitamin D supply through dietary intake also appears critical, as it has been reported that through vitamin D supplements there is an inverse relationship with MS (19). The role of vitamin D is supported by animal studies where mouse models have shown that vitamin D deficient mice succumb faster to MS, but once administered with vitamin D the symptoms diminish (22).

The idea that an increase in saturated fats in modern diets may result in increased risks for MS (and diabetes type 2) has been known since the early 1950s and reinforced on several occasions (23). Epidemiological studies in Norway have shown that inland farming communities with a high intake of animal products have higher MS incidence rates then coastal communities where fish consumption is high. Subsequent studies have also shown a negative correlation between MS and the consumption of fish, fruits and vegetables (23). Any wonder the rates of MS are increasing so fast in Australia knowing the poor diets of most kids. It has been shown that MS sufferers have deficiencies in essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), primarily the omega 3 fats. This is demonstrated by alteration in the lipid and fatty acid composition in plaque tissue from the MS brain, compared to normal brain white matter (1).

It is believed that humans evolved on a diet with a ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 of approximately 1:1, whereas in Western diets the ratio varies between 15:1 and 20:1 (24). We just have too much vegetable oil (omega 6) in our diet. It is added liberally to all processed foods.

A large study conducted over a 35 year period showed a diet with low saturated fat and supplementation with cod liver oil provided MS patients with long term benefits relating to mortality, relapse severity and disability, particularly if initiated during the earliest stages of the disease (25). These results have shown that MS patients can expect to survive and be mobile and otherwise normal to an advanced age if they follow an extremely low fat diet and omega-3 supplementation (26).

The rarity of MS in the Japanese, whose diet consists of low levels of saturated fat and high levels of omega 3 fatty acids, is another indication of the role of omega 3 oils in MS (27). There is now significant evidence to show it is a contributing factor to the development of the disease in conjunction with other environmental factors (7).

The development of MS is also believed to be linked to oxidant stress in the body from a lack of antioxidants (28). Along with other possible environmental factors, the actual role of oxidative stress in patients with MS is poorly understood (29). The brain and nervous system are particularly susceptible to oxidative damage due to the low content of antioxidants in this area of the body as they have to be imported (30).

Studies have shown that oxidative stress causes pro-inflammatory chemical messengers called cytokines to be produced, contributing to the process of demyelination 31. Sufficient antioxidants thus ensures neuroprotection by suppressing inflammation; this limits the effects of MS (29,31,32).

Oligodendrocytes, a particular type of brain cell, that produces the extensive myelin sheaths are known to be particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress; this helps explain the lack of remyelination during remission stages (1). Oxidation (free radicals) literally stops the repair work on any damage to the myelin sheath.

In helping to prevent and restrict the development of MS, we can be guided by a number of recommendations determined through scientific studies:

    • Regular moderate sun exposure (15-30 min/day)
    • Reduced intake of saturated fat and omega-6 PUFA together with a higher consumption of omega-3 PUFA. We can achieve this through eating fish and taking supplements
    • A daily supplement of vitamin D to ensure the circulating level of vitamin D remains between 100 - 150 nanomoles per liter
    • Consume at least 5-7 serves of antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables each day and supplement.

  59. Eat Butter?  But isn't Butter Bad for the Heart?

People have been mislead to believe that.

I like many people in the natural health field believe that the margarine is good and butter is bad…   wrong!!!

According to a chart from a lecture that I attended on fats, oils and cholesterol, butter is only 1 molecule from being plastic and the lecture said there are studies which show that the body can not break down margarine.

If anyone would like a copy of the chart showing the steps to make margarine email me and I will send it to you

After seeing it, I feel sure you will think... Oh my goodness, how could anyone with good conscious market margarine as something healthy.

On the other hand, butter has been the mainstay for many generations.   My parents and grandparents used both butter and lard.   None died of a heart attack.   All were sharp as a tack mentally when they died.

I know there is conflicting information, please continue to research.   I have and my conclusion?...  Pass the Butter. :o)

  60. Potential Side Effects of Fatty Acids

Since most fatty acids contain prostaglandins, which is considered a natural anti-inflammatory.  After taking FA supplements, people report less stiffness and pain in their joints.

The body needs fats to manufacture vitamin D which is used for immune function, bone growth etc.  UV light completes the Vitamin D production.

Good fats help with inflammation in the arteries, which is believed to be the real culprit behind plaque and cholesterol build up.  Fats are believed to heal the little rip and abrasions and helps the arteries remain clear of plaque and supple.

This isn't hard to understand when you think of what people use oils and fats for in the skin.  To soothe, moisturize and heal.

Because all hormones and antibodies are attached to a fat, oil or cholesterol, it makes sense when people suspect that an intake of Evening Primrose Oil could help menses problems and foster a healthier immune response.

Since 70% of the brain and myelin of the nervous system is made of fat and cholesterol... not only do people use Super Omega 3 oil and Flaxseed oil for OCD and GAD, but many report an improvement in concentration and memory.

There are only 2 precautions of taking fat supplements that I know of.... One is if you are on a blood thinner or have a bleeding disorder because they very slightly thin the blood and Two, if taken without a protein, the fats can settle in the liver.

Of course most people would call the above side effects, I call them side benefits.

  62. There has been a confusion about my address.  I recently moved to 750 Church Street, Landisville, PA  17538  and my new phone number is 717-898-2220.   The old address are on hundreds of other sites linking to me.  I don't even know who they are.   They still contain my old address.

I am sorry for the confusion, but Landisville, PA is my current home address.

  63. I would caution everyone of starting and stopping this herbal protocol to often because they may develop a resistance in their body.  Starting a protocol is much like dieting.... the first time you diet, you loose weight easily, but if you go off of it and go on it a second time you won't loose weight as easily and if you do that time and time again, the body's homeostasis adjusts to it and dieting doesn't work anymore... Same with taking the herbs.
It is tough to be dedicated for 1 to 3 years of your life continuously.  But it is THE only way that I know.
  64. There is so much to tell people when working with their health.  One I sometimes forget is that consuming peanut products blocks enzyme production.  This can effect the liver's ability to help digest fats small enough so that the body can't readily use them to rebuild the myelin.

Protein is needed to trigger the liver to produce bile salts, however, peanuts are not a good source of protein and should be avoided while working on the myelin.

  65. There is evidence that magnesium is often deficient in those who have MS (Multiple Sclerosis) which supports the idea that Magnesium supplementation is beneficial to those with a thin myelin.

I often don't suggest magnesium in the beginning because the protocol is expensive and I try to be very prudent in what I suggest.  But I want everyone to know that adding (800 to 1300 mg) magnesium to the protocol will not frustrate the protocol, but will actually enhance it.

Please just make sure that you balance the magnesium with potassium if you are deficient to prevent high blood pressure.

Magnesium helps the body metabolize B vitamins (I only suggest probiotics so the body can produce its own B complex since B Complex supplements can cause anxiety) and fatty acids.

But know that many have become symptom free without the magnesium.

In the mean time I would avoid things which can contribute to a magnesium deficiency such as milk products refined processed foods and saturated fats.

  66. There are some people on the protocol who would like to meet with like minded people to share experiences and helpful fints.

    To join:

"Meet others on this program, by joining our
FaceBook group "Heal your myelin sheathing". You can create an account
on http://www.facebook.com, then type "Heal your myelin sheathing" in
the search bar, and click on "Join Group".

This group is not run by Dr. Mary, but she is supportive of it.

  67. A word to those who have reached the level of being totally symptom free.  I know the first inclination would be to quit gagging down all those herbs right away. :o)

Please read this first.  Often if you quit the herbs as soon as you get symptom free, the deficiencies are on the edge and stress can take it back over to the deficiency side.   Therefore, I suggest taking the herbs at full protocol level for 3 months after you are symptom free.

Then I would wean off the herbs by 1 capsule a day every 2 weeks, to help retrain your body to conserve the nutrients it was so freely getting before.  Encouraging it to store the nutrients.

It seems like a pain, but far less people ever have to go back onto the herbs who do it that way.
  68. An amazing video by TED featuring Mark Gungor talking about Men's Brains Vs Women's Brains.  Doesn't really have a lot to do with OCD, but I think it merits people watching to understand how our brains work.  Here is the link ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuMZ73mT5zM
  69. I strongly urge that everyone attends our online lectures on OCD.  Here you can learn from others and ask questions.  This year we are having the regular nightly classes but are offering classes in the morning this year.   We are hoping that it helps make this information more available for others.  If a different time would be helpful for someone, please let us know.
  70. Q:  Does or Doesn't St John's Wort help the nervous system?

A:  Sometimes.  Let me use an analogy to help you understand St. John's Wort' s  limitation.

    In this analogy
The St. John's Wort is a larger water pump than you have now.
The water is neurotransmitters such as serotonin.
The hose is your myelin sheathing in which lies the potential for the release of serotonin..

St. John's wort stimulates the release of serotonin....... if you have the right size hose, adding a pump of higher pressure can increase the flow.  If your myelin is healthy St John's Wort appears to help encouraging more serotonin release.

But if you have a hose the size of a straw, putting a high power water pump behind it can't not increase the flow.  If your myelin is thin, St John's Wort doesn't appear to help in serotonin release.

So for people who have a healthy myelin, St John's wort appears to help increase the release of serotonin.  But for those whose hose i.e. myelin is thin, the St. John's wort isn't very helpful.

I think in some cases it is better to nourish and increase the thickness of your myelin sheathing ... increasing the circumference of your hose.

NOTE:  Also St. John's Wort is counter indicated with SSRI's and other medications.  It also increases your susceptibility to sunburns.

  71. Recently someone asked me a question that I hear quite often.  "What is the significance of dreaming nightly"?

It appears that when the nervous system has enough of the right nutrients to heal, you get into that dream REM of sleep. The opposite is more important... Any night you don't dream, your nervous system DIDN'T have enough nutrients to heal.

It is also believed that you heal more efficiently in that level of sleep you dream in.

Also it is believed that dreaming is a sort of rebooting of the brain.  Just at night you turn off your computer to start it up in the morning.  A rebooted computer typically works more efficiently.  Has less glitches in its processing information.

I have even heard that psychologically it is better for you to dream... That dreaming is the body's way of analyzing what you experienced and felt during the day.

I have distinctly noticed that MOST people who do not have symptoms of OCD, ADD or GAD dream nightly.

  72. Instead of depression medication I suggest

    Liver

The liver has hundreds of functions and is pivotal in the regulation of hormones.  It also helps with the digestion of fats, which is needed for the nervous system.

Accompanying Symptoms:  poor digestion i.e. bloating or passing of gas; blood sugar imbalances; waking up at night for any reason; or any female problems with breast, ovaries or menses

Suggestions: Liver Cleanse formula in aggressive amounts.

    Adrenals

Depression, which is accompanied by anxiety or phobias, is usually the result of poor adrenal function.

Accompanying Symptoms:  A feeling of stress or impending doom; inability to go to sleep until late; having an energy dip in the afternoon; or difficulty in waking up early in the morning.

Suggestions: Parsley and Mood Elevator Concentrate.

Lack of Fatty Acids and Thin Myelin Sheathing

The potential for the release of "feel good" neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, lies with the health and thickness of the myelin sheathing (fatty coating on the nerves).  At least 70% of the brain and the myelin are made of fatty acids.   There are also herbs which appear to be the raw materials for the other 30%.

Accompanying Symptoms:  Noise and commotion gets on your nerves; having a hard time concentrating; or not dreaming (should dream every night).

Suggestions: Super Omega 3 Oils in aggressive amounts and a nervine combo such as Nerve Control or Chinese Stress Relief.

    Thyroid

A lack of thyroid hormones can cause depression.  Often those who have a weak thyroid coupled with a thin myelin will exhibit bi-polar symptoms.

Accompanying Symptoms: Stinking thinking; paranoia; constant fatigue; weight fluctuation; or change in hair and skin.

Suggestions: Target TS II; Thyroid Activator; or TS II

    Hypoglycemia aka Low Blood Sugar

During blood sugar lows, people often report feelings of aggression or depression, especially in children.

Coincident Symptoms:  Symptoms: Feeling shaky; weak; or having a headache when a meals has been skipped.

Suggestions:  Work with liver... Liver Cleanse Formula and GTF Chromium.

    Puberty

Often as a child enters adulthood their hormones become especially challenging.

Coincident Symptoms: Bad attitude or explosive anger.

    Suggestions:   Blessed Thistle.

As they say in the commercial, depression hurts.... but sometimes when you nourish the body, depression leaves.

So if you are reading this, please realize that there is hope.  I at one time suffered severely from depression, but after taking the things my body needed AND taking my mother's advice in trying my best to help others, I now absolutely love my life!

  73. Causes of Depression

Depression is either caused by physical or psychological conditions.

No herb can truly reverse psychological depression... such as overcoming past hurts or abuse or making your husband more affectionate.

But herbs can help address the physical causes of depression.

Many of us feel blue now and then but that is not depression.  True depression is when it starts to be an intrinsic part of your life.

Depression is often compounded by its stigma, and by people telling you to just snap out of it or that you enjoy being miserable.    But no one truly wants to be depressed.

Without realizing it there are some who do not take action to help themselves out of the depression, usually because they have nothing with which to replace.  To give up their depression would be to leave a void in their lives.

In these cases, filling in even the smallest space of their lives with something outside of their depression can help.

My mother use to always say," Help others with their problems and you will soon forget your own."  Now that I am an old lady, I realize how smart my mother was.

This article is about those who are depressed for physical reasons such as chemical and hormonal imbalances.

    Doctor's "cure all"...... Chemical-altering Drugs

It is a crime how flippantly the medical profession gives out mood-altering drugs.  For years, I have been aggravated by the large number of people who tell me that they have been told that their problems (most of which have been proven biologically based) were all in their heads.  Most of these people get relief by diet or supplements.

My very first encounter of Prozac abuse was a woman whose husband had died.  While her son was on his way to the hospital, he was killed in a wreck.  At the funeral, a doctor friend of the family gave her Prozac.  She came to me 2 years later saying that she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

I suggested that she ask the doctor to wean her off the mind-altering drug.  For the first time she was able to grieve her "very real" loss and, as she worked through that grief, ALL of her symptoms of Alzheimer's completely disappeared. Another six or better years later she was still doing great!

The straw that broke the camel's back, and the reason for this heated article, is when a young boy of 6 didn't want to eat; he said that his stomach hurt.

After a series of very invasive tests, including putting a scope up his rectum, the doctor decided the boy was depressed and suggested that they consider drug therapy (Prozac).  Can you imagine... 6 years old and put on prozac?

After a consultation, we concluded that the little boy had parasites. His mother put him on a parasite cleanse instead.  After this boy passed pin worms and started to move his bowels regularly, his stomach and appetite were fine.

There have been many such cases.  Evidently in these cases, depression was misdiagnosed.  The first woman lost 2 people very dear to her... that was not unfounded depression...THAT WAS GRIEF!  What she was feeling wasn't a disease, but a natural response to the events that were going on in her life.

The little boy wasn't suffering from depression; his doctor was suffering from incompetence.

I am not saying that there is no such thing as clinical depression, as a matter of fact; I believe that it does exist.   However, I believe that most depression is either a physical response or it is a doctor's inability to determine what is wrong with someone.

At first glance Prozac may sound harmless, but looking at this mind-altering drug more closely encourages its avoidance.

The nervous system and brain are soothed and calmed when serotonin is released.

Serotonin, the "feel good" neurotransmitter, is a substance that chemically connects the electrical impulse of one nerve ganglia to another.  After the adjoining ganglia receives the serotonin, some of the excess goes into the original ganglia or is absorbed by the body.

SSRIs (Selected Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) type medications, prevents the body from cleaning out the excess serotonin in hope of increasing the amount available.

This treatment may sound solid; however, blocking the reuptake disables the body's ability to regulate this vital substance.  So as your moods and activities change, the blocking of reuptake is constant.

The official list of side effects from SSRIs is quite mild compared to that of those who take them.  I have had 2 personal friends and countless people I have talked to that reported to me symptoms that are not in the official list of side effects.

These symptoms seem quite uniform.  They include: Sexual dysfunction (in both men and women); dad dreams; homicidal and suicidal thoughts; paranoia; dulled emotions; and a loss of concern about the consequences of their actions.

The New England Journal of Medicine also cited a study done in the University of California in San Diego which mentions birth defects from a pregnant woman taking this type of drug.  Because of this study and another reporting high risk of miscarriage, the March of Dimes is expected to soon advise all pregnant women to stop taking SSRIs and similar drugs.

The fastest growing target groups are juveniles and college students.  SSRIs are now the widest prescribed antidepressants in the U.S... $1.3 BILLION Dollars worth of Prozac prescriptions alone where filled in the year of 1994.   Now that the patent for this "miracle drug" has ran out, other SSRIs have been developed to entice the public.

It is a sad affair that doctors dispense SSRIs with little more thought than they used to dispense lollipops in my day.  Please remember that although it is given so liberally that does not mean that it is safe.

However if you are on SSRIs, Do not abruptly stop or go off them without a doctor's assistance.  Many people have contemplated killing themselves or others while quitting cold turkey.

  74. When Anxiety Hits.... The Adrenal Connection

Anxiety, Panic attacks, Depression, General Anxiety Disorder or GAD often accompany OCD.   If you understand the cause it is easy to see why.

There are glands which sit on top of each of your kidneys called adrenal glands.   During times of stress, these glands go into a primitive survival mode.  They produce adrenaline to help you fight or flee from the stressor.  However, most of our stressors today are not something like a bear, that we can fight or run away from to protect our lives, rather they are bosses,co-workers,  teenagers, spouses, bill collectors etc.

    • Coffee, tea and caffeine... over-stimulate the adrenals, keeping them in an already agitated state
    • Lack of nutrients espeically potassium, sodium, B-complex and fatty acids...which help soothe the adrenals

Mood Elevator is probably my very favorite nutrionally supportive combination for the adrenals.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder and anxiety attacks takes a while to go away when nourishing the myelin and adrenals, but it is the only permament solution of which I am aware and definitely worth it.

  75. Last year I went to a health convention and one of the lectures was on brain health.

    1.  A well ordered life where continuing learning is a part helps a person retain healthy brain cells.

    2.  If you make new brain cells and they are not stimulated by use in 2 weeks they can die.

So mental aerobics is important if you want to stay intellectually sharp.  Learning keeps people engaged of the world around them.

  76. An article published in the May issue of Psychological Science,  was based on a Harris poll of 1,179 American children done in 2007, indicates that at least 10% of those children  who play video games show signs of serious addiction.  .

This phenomenon has been noted to accompany heavy metal music, high adrenaline movies and dangerous activities as well.

Some call it the adrenaline "rush" or "high".  Whatever name you give it, the high level of adrenaline can be addictive.

When adrenals are over stimulated they can first cause anxiety and when they get exhausted … depression.

HIGH caffeine drink companies seem to be targeting kids... Red Bull for instance is portayed as fun producing in popular movies like cigarettes were back in our day.

The high visual and audio stimuli plus chemicals such as coffee, tea and caffeine are dooming many of the younger generation with a life time of adrenal problems.

I strongly suggest cutting out over stimulation be it caffeine or videos especially for our children.

I also suggest a raw vegetable and fruit diet which contains the organic sodium and potassium which the body uses to nourish and soothe these precious glands.

Studies aside, I too have noticed that more and more parents contacting me of their childrens swing between anxiety and depression, both are often helped when cutting out adrenaline producing activities.

  77. Self cutting, Self injury, Self biting, Self burning

Although not “officially” considered a type of Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder, I see it often accompanied by OCD symptoms.

I think the adrenals are also involved.

For those who never experienced such an urge, please let me try to explain.

Some people have such intense negative emotions and feelings that they
seem unbearable.  The agony that they cause inside of the person is
relieved slightly when the person inflicts an injury, which helps
facilitate in the release of the emotion they feel.

I am not sure why, but it appears that this phenomena needn’t be taught
and has been evident throughout many cultures and centuries of time.
This however, doesn’t make it a healthy practice.

Scarring, infections, if taken to the severe, death from blood loss can
occur, plus the practice doesn’t permanently alleviate the pressure.

Punching a bag, blood curdling screaming, cutting out ALL coffee, tea,
caffeine, adrenaline producing movies and video games can prevent the
pressure from building. And avoiding stress, if possible.

Soothing the adrenals and nourishing the myelin sheathing is probably THE
    best solution for these feelings.

Omega 3 oils, Nervous Fatigue and Chinese Stress Relief in aggressive amounts are my first
    choice.

  78. pH imbalance can lead to cell malnutrition

Fluid bathes all the cells within the body.  This fluid also allows nutrients to go into the cells and toxins to come out.  If the fluid is between 6.3 and 6.6, the cells can accept nutrients and release toxins easily.

If the pH of the fluid is off, the cell's outer membrane becomes a little thicker to protect the cell.  Much like the body will protect the hand by toughening the skin to a callous.

If you feel you are not getting the full benefit of your supplementing, I would first determine your saliva and urine pH.  Get test strips that are in increments of .5 (you can get them locally at health stores.  If you cannot find a retailer, you can purchase them from me, but the shipping would cost more that the strips).

Following the directions that come with the strips, test your urine and saliva (using a separate strips for each) first thing in the morning before you brush your teeth, smoke a cigarette, chew gum, drink or eat anything.  If your pH is outside the range or 6.3 to 6.6 you are not getting maximum benifit from your supplements.

Email me your results and I can make some suggestions.

  79. So many time, I hear heart wrenching stories of people with OCD or GAD whose family members get frustrated with them because the family members do not understand why the sufferer doesn't just snap out of it, or get over it.

When a person hobbles into a room with a cast on their broken leg, other people will compassionately help the person to compensate for their perdicament.  No one tells them to get over the broken leg and walk right.

But with OCD or GAD... there is no outward sign.  Nothing that is tangible to show people that you are having symptoms of a biological condition.

I am fortunate in that I have had OCD.  Because I know without a doubt, being such a strong personality,  I would have told people to just cut the crap and get over it.   But I have been there and I understand.

It isn't something which is easily overcome.   As strong as I am, I did not have the control.

But how do you get them to understand?  Well..... you just might not be able to.  But know you are not alone.  It isn't just you, and I believe with all that I am there is hope of overcoming both GAD and OCD.

If you fill out the questionnaires, it does not oblige you to buy anything and my consultations are free.  If I can help in any way, please feel free to contact me.

  80. A lot of people believe that supplements are totally safe and you can never take too many.   This is not true especially with oil supplements.

I suggest that the average size person takes no more than 15 gram of oil supplements and to learn the precautions.

There are 3 major precautions to be considered when taking Fatty Acids.

    1. Fatty Acids thin the blood, use only under supervision if you are: on blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder or are a hemophiliac.
    2. Fatty Acid should be taken at least 2 hours away from mucilangenous herbs such as: Psyllium, Slippery Elm, etc.  There is no interaction if taken together, it is just helps prevent the mucilangenous herbs from absorbing the fats and pulling them out of the body.
    3. Fatty Acids should be taken with a protein.   This is true when taking any oil based supplements such as: Vitamins A, D, E and K as well as Flax Seed Oil, Evening Primrose Oils, Black Currant Oil, Omega 3 Oils, etc., to get the full benefit from them and to prevent developing a fatty liver.
  81. CNN briefly  mentioned that when testing water, Philadelphia Officials determine the byproducts of more than 56 different pharmaceuticals were in the tap water.

Some of the types of drugs were antibiotics, mood stabilizers, sex hormones and anti-convulsants.

Why didn't this hit front page news across the nation?

This is not a new phenomenon.  As a matter of fact, in the book "The Secret Language of Plants",  Stephen Harrod Buhner reported that in 1984 environmentalists knew of this poisoning of our water.

Medications that people take as well as radiation pass through and get into the sewage system, which eventually gets into the water supply.  The federal government does not require testing for medications.  Most treatment plants do not efficiently filter them out.

If they are found, rarely are pharmaceutical screening results released to the public

A whopping $3.7 billion for prescription and $3.3 million for  nonprescription drug purchases, according to IMS Health and The Nielsen Co.  The thought of these chemicals being absorbed in and digested by the body is concerning.  This is compounded by the danger of possible interaction between the various medications.

There are not extensive studies on what this means for our health,  but common sense tells us it has to put a toll on the body.  Even though our liver can help protect us from some contaminants, daily exposure adds up.

I am a strong endorser of Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification.   A good RO unit can help filter out so much more than the average water filtration commonly used.  It is more expensive but I believe it is vital to good health.

  82. A few years ago it is West Nile Disease, then Bird Flu.... I personally know of noone who had either of them... So this year... it is The Swine Flu.

What a farce…If the CDC was so upfront with warning people why did they let blood tainted with HIV and Hepatitis C go unannounced for years after they knew there was a problem.  But we are suppose to get our panties in a twist about bird flu (which never happened) and now swine flu… Go figure.

Does anyone other me question it being a co-incidence that the pharmaceutical companies have vaccines and medication for both flues?

It is also amazing that the pharmaceutical companies have already produced 12 million dosages of serium that was then purchased and stockpiled by the federal government which are now ready for the so called impending epidemic.

Last year 224,000 people died due to properly taken prescription medication.  Why doesn’t the media emphasize that instead of the 40 substantiated cases of swine flu?  Which would you consider an epidemic?

I am not denying that there is such as thing as the swine flu, as a matter of fact some people may have gotten the swine flu and not know it because the symptoms are that of any flu… fever, vomiting and diarrhea.

I do believe in being prepared for virus and bacteria. Since Swine Flu is caused by a virus…. I keep Silver Shield, VS-C and Lymph Gland Cleanse on hand.  If I get the virus I will let it run its course (the vast majority of the time people will breeze right through it), and if I feel my body is being overcome by it, I will pull out the herbs.  What I won’t do is panic nor lose sleep over it.

  83. Is there a doctor in the House….Knowing that the AMA and pharmaceuticals have their investments in the media, I am amazed that the TV show House has not been canceled.   For those who never watch the show it is like a medical mystery program on Fox on Monday nights.  Each and every week a doctor names House who is an abrasive, obnoxious egotistical doctor breaks rules and laws while practicing medicine under the influence of Vicodins which he eats like candy.  The hospital administrator basically ignores his addiction.

Each week inevitably there is a patient who has a condition with very complicated symptoms and house and his group of doctors GUESS at what is wrong with the patients.  Putting them through all kind of test and treatment which almost kills them several times, with the “Oh well” attitude as the person bleeds from an orifice or has his brain nearly explode.

During this whole time, the doctors… especially doctor House ignores the patients’ wishes, ridicules their beliefs and assumes they are lying.

You can count on the fact that right before the end of the show miraculously the team of doctors happen upon the right diagnosis and usually save the person’s life.

The really scary thing about this show is that House is probably really close to a reality show, except in the real life the patient doesn’t always live.

I am not saying never go to a doctor, but when you do, make him take the time to talk to you and explain the risks and side effects.  I would also always get second opinion

  84. Fatty acids called essential because it is essential to consume them to live and be healthy.  We cannot produce them therefore must be gotten from foods and supplements.  We will die if no essential oils are taken in and will develop a serious deficiency disorder if not enough are ingested.

If your body has low levels of EFA's the myelin sheath, the covering protecting the nerves, may not built up enough  therefore unable to store the neurotransmitters thus the linked to ADD and Dyslexia, as recent research indicates.

Approximately 70% of the myelin sheath is made up of cholesterol and fatty acids.  It's no wonder if a diet low in these causes so many problems with our children and adults alike.  It effects may vary from individual to individual.

Depression is another direct link to low levels of these good fats.

"When researchers monitor eating habits across countries, they find that as fish consumption goes up, depression rates go down.  In fact, there is a sixty-fold difference in depression rates across countries from the highest  (Japan and Taiwan) to the lowest (North America, Europe and New Zealand) omega-3 fat consumption.

Also note worth is that postpartum depression decreases as women increase their consumption of fish.  Many people also report a drop in mood when they switch to a low-fat diet.

There have been increasing studies over the last decade by neuroscientists examining the consequences of Omega-3 deficiencies in the central nervous system.

From the studies we can conclude that Omega 3 oils:

    • Alter the serotonin and dopamine levels, two very important neurotransmitters.
    • Compromises the blood-brain barrier, which protects the brain from unwanted invaders.
    • Decreases normal blood flow to the brain
    • 35% reduction in brain phosphatidylserine (PS) levels (antidepressant activity)

Trying to choose more healthy nutrients, people often turn to transfatty acids, such as margarine and shortening  which destroy the essential nutritional character of the oils and block the use of normal essential fatty acids, which are necessary for healthy cell function.

  85.  Taking care of your heart health can be difficult during gloomy, cold and dismal weather, January, February; March can be the most difficult months of the year for the 34 million Americans who suffer come form SAD (Seasonal affective disorder).

Full spectrum lighting in your home and office helps stimulate the pineal via the retina, which often helps dramatically. Get an edge on the winter doldrums by taking Vitamin D3 every day to combat the feelings of sluggishness and depression – make your own dose of sunshine work for you.  And commit to some type of physical activity every day to keep the body moving and the heart pumping.  Keeping the heart pumping at its’ peak can affect your mood.

  86. We are constantly re-evaluating what will help others... This area is where you can find our updates.... and information which is not directly causing OCD, but often accompanies it.
  87. A wonder friend of mine name David sent me a link to an article.

The article started out by saying.. COMING TO AMERICA SOON!!! Since it was in a health news type bulletin, I thought it was going to talk about the cure for cancer or hemorrhoids or something that will ease suffering. But it wasn't...... It was talking about a new product called ultrashape which they are trying to get FDA approved to use in the United States.

Ultrashape machine is using ultrasound to destroy fat cells so the body can rid itself of unwanted cellulite. Sound interesting? It sure did to me, I was thinking of buying a home version and keep it on all night long. :o) But then I thought what would it do to the Myelin Sheathing (protective fatty coating around the nervous system).

As I thought about it, I realized it substantiated what I have warned women about for the lat 15years.… If ultrasound can break up fat in the tissue of your thighs, what is ultrasound that is pointed towards an infant’s brain and nervous system doing to it. After all 70% of a human's nervous system and brain is made of fatty acids and cholesterol.

It is easy to see the potential for destruction of mere sound if you think about an opera singer hitting a high note which can shatter glass. And the fact that doctors use ultrasound to destroy gall and kidney stones, even tough to break calcium stones.

I dare to say if a doctor has a fetal stethoscope it is covered with dust and cobwebs. Almost ALL doctors use a Doppler to listen to a baby's heart beat. An article I read said that the Doppler does just as much as if not more damage to the nervous system as an ultra sound..

I wonder if this machine is made available in the US, if mothers will question more the use of them on their fetus.

  88. I wanted to mention that adding the herbal combination Mood Elevator has made a huge difference with the children that I have suggested it to. The children themselves mentioned there mood was calmer and their parent's definitely noticed a "cheery" disposition from the children. This all makes perfect sense to me because Mood Elevator seems to have an affinity on the adrenals...and adrenals and mood are linked.
  89. General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) often accompanies a thin myelin as does OCD.  Approximately 40% of those who have OCD also have anxiety.  Therefore we are adding this forum for to you post.

  90. Support groups and forums are popular in part because people benefit from talking with others who have experienced what they have, who can relate to how they are feeling.  I am opening this venue to let people share.

Things you might want to post are experiences, what has and hasn't worked for you, questions, ways of coping, etc.
