How in the world do I know which is best?   I have been an herbalist since 1990, and I still sometimes need a score card on the Fatty acids line-up.

Over the next few weeks I am going take the ALA, DHA, EPA and GLA and explore the advantages of one over the other for various health conditions.  They overlap and can be confusing.. But I will try my best to make it clear.

EFA (also known as Vitamin F) stands for Essential Fatty Acids… This means it is “Essential” the product has to be consumed, because the body can not produce it entirely.  They are also fats which are used for biological process and building instead a storage unit for energy.

Most people are frightened into lowering their cholesterol and lowering their fat intake at all cost, but the primary fuel of the heart is FATS. Cholesterol is also important to the body.

Triglycerides are a different story… 3 fats attached to a single glycerin molecule is a byproduct of poor digestion and can contribute the development of clots and indicates that the liver is unable to aid properly with the digestion of sugars and fats.

Join us next week when as we start taking each of the vitally important fat nutrients one by one.
